Robinson Formula Estimate0.0 kg / 0.0 lbs

These formulas provide two commonly used clinical estimates of ideal body weight based on height and sex. Individual healthy weight varies by frame size, muscle mass, and body composition.

How to Calculate & Formula Details

Mathematical Model FormulaDevine (Men): 50kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft. Devine (Women): 45.5kg + 2.3kg per inch over 5ft.

Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed for clinical drug dosing, but are commonly used as a general reference point for a healthy weight range based on height.

Devine Formula

The most widely used clinical formula, developed in 1974 and still used today to estimate medication dosages based on lean body mass.

Robinson Formula

A 1983 refinement of the Devine formula shown here as a second reference point, since no single formula perfectly fits every body type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ideal weight formulas accurate for everyone?

No. These formulas were designed for general clinical reference and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or frame size, so athletes and very muscular individuals may fall well outside the estimated range while still being healthy.

Why do the Devine and Robinson formulas give different results?

They were derived from different population studies. Robinson generally produces a slightly higher estimate than Devine, so use the range between them as a rough guide rather than a precise target.

Should I try to hit my exact ideal weight?

Not necessarily. These are population averages. A healthier approach is to consider body composition, waist-to-hip ratio, and how you feel rather than chasing one precise number.
